Aoi Bungaku Ep. 3: Society

“Society only sees me as a Monster…”
In this episode 3 of No Longer Human segment of the series, Youzou has settled down with Shizuko-san and her daughter Shigeko-chan. The little monster illusion seemed to disappear for the moment and having a sense of peace and the feeling of ‘now’ being human, he is at ease – somewhat. I say that because Shizuko gives him a false comfort of things are alright as they are. Perhaps because she’s wants that feeling of a family life that she shelters him in that comfort. But because of that shell that’s built, Youzou remembers from his past showing his father all the paintings of his real self. His father rejects those paintings and tells him who would want to see his real self and that those who can’t earn their keep are failures as humans. He wants to earn his own money. Shizuko encourages him to draw for a manga. She presents his drawings to her boss, the Editor of the newspaper where she works. He’s amazed that the drawings came out quite well. He even commented that he was surprised it came from the “Lady Killer” which Shizuko asks him not to call Youzou that. The Editor agrees to print his manga and Shizuko asked that he keeps Youzou’s identity a secret.
The Manga is printed, all seems well with Youzou now that he was earning money. One day while drawing, the little monster shows up and is disappointed that Youzou is not doing any drawings of it because he became a real human and chases it way.

The little happiness of feeling like a human comes to a halt when Mr. Scumbag himself Horiki enters the picture. He heard that he was living with Shizuko and her daughter. He states that Society wouldn’t approve of that kind of thing. Youzou questions him about who cares about Society. Horiki shoots back at him that he should be so high on himself since his manga was sold. He also tells Youzou that a journalist was looking for him to do a interview and that he would be surprise to know that the Lady Killer has started life over. Horiki then asks if Youzou had any money and thus far, he has kept his mouth closed about Youzou. It doesn’t show in the episode, but I’m quite sure that Youzou gave Horiki money. After he leaves, Shigeko states she didn’t like that man.

Youzou began to ponder on Society and this begins the spiraling down into another abyss of feeling no longer human. Even the Editor tried to entice him with earning more money if he drew about the double-suicide incident. The seed had been planted and poor Youzou… Walking in a daze, he hears the sound of a wind chime. Looking in the direction where it come from, he sees a woman sitting in a shop looking dowdy. Both exchanges a glance at one another and something inside of him becomes frightened and he begin to run away as if his life depended on it. He finds himself at the host bar (from ep. 1) and goes in for a drink and later he’s in the upstairs room with the barmaid. The next morning, he buys a pack of cigarette and the female behind the counter remarked that he smell of alcohol. He apologized and walks away. Going back home, he is greeted by Shigeko and he calls her his little goddess. She replied that she’s no goddess. He asked if she was hungry and that should go and get something to eat. Shigeko asked if was it true that if one asked God for something, it will be given. Youzou replied probably and Shigeko goes on to say that she wished for a real day shocking Youzou. Shigeko told him the women of the neighborhood said that he killed a woman and if it was true. Looking behind her, Youzou sees the monster illusion walking down the stairs and he run away from Shigeko. He ends up back at the host bar.

Returning home, he walks in on Shizuko and Horiki having tea. Horiki tells him that he has to return home because his father had collapsed. He gives Youzou an envelope of money that Hirame-san asked him to pass on to Youzou. Youzou said he couldn’t return home until he has become an accomplished artist. Shizuko also tells him that he should leave right away. Youzou picks up the envelope and tells Horiki that they should go out; he knew of a place that was already open. Shizuko asked him was he going to run away. Youzou replied that the one who told him that “everything was fine like this, was you.” Both men leave. Wandering from place to place the downward spiraling shows deeply on Youzou face. He later sheds tears as he laid in the embrace of the barmaid.

The next morning, Youzou drunkenly walks through the snow. He throws up and lays in it and cries and apologized to everyone for being born. As he laid there the female from the shop walks up to him and asked him has he been drinking so early in the morning. Youzou tells her that he is a monster and that’s how Society sees him. He goes on to tell her about the story of the double-suicide. She doesn’t believed in the story. She heard from the barmaid that he made manga and he was good at telling stories. Youzou replied that Society said he killed that woman. She said, “isn’t Society made of a bunch of people gathered together.” Before taking her leave, she tells him not to stay outside too long, or he would catch a cold. Youzou goes back to the host bar and tells the barmaid that he broke up with Shizou. She suggested that they go upstairs. Youzou wanted to know why were women always so kind to him. She told him because the world was not kind to women.
From upstairs, Youzou looks down at the female from the shop playing with a cat.

End of episode.
I tell ya… series like this is right up my alley. The seriousness of it and the fact that it makes one take it apart piece-by-piece, gets two thumbs up for me. *Sigh* Only one more part to go.
Gotta go through my list to see what’s next to blog on.
That’s it in a nutshell.
